How Do You Grill a Turkey

How do you grill a turkey you ask? It’s way easier than you might think! It takes about the same amount of cooking time as it would to cook your turkey the conventional way in the oven, but it’s a delicious twist on a traditional Thanksgiving staple. We had an early Thanksgiving last weekend with just our family and decided grilling the turkey was the way to go. It turned out pretty good so we wanted to share with you so you can try it yourself.

How To Grill Your Thanksgiving Turkey

Ingredients and Materials:
1 turkey
2-3 citrus fruit (oranges, lemons and/or limes)
1 tablespoon butter
garlic powder (optional)
1 turkey size cooking bag
large aluminum baking pan

1. Preheat 1/2 your gas grill so the internal temperature of your grill on the half that isn’t lit with the lid down is around 350`F. If your grill doesn’t have a built in thermometer you may need to purchase an Ovenproof Thermometer to keep an eye on your grill’s temperature.

2. Make sure your turkey has thawed completely. Remove any extra parts from inside the turkey. Slice the citrus fruit and stuff it into the turkey, and place a few pieces on top of the turkey if you want.

3. Rub the butter into the skin of the turkey and sprinkle it with garlic powder if you’d like.

4. Place the turkey into the bag, and place the bagged turkey into the aluminum pan.

5. Place the pan on the non lit half of the grill (so the turkey is only receiving indirect heat). Cook the turkey the same as you would according to your turkey’s directions if you were cooking it in the oven. About 3 hours for a 12 pound turkey at 350`F. A 16 to 18 pound turkey would take about 3 1/2 to 4 hours.

Turn the turkey pan regularly to help the turkey heat and cook evenly. Monitor the temperature to make sure it stays around 350`F.

6. Check the internal temperature of the turkey with a meat thermometer. When the turkey is finished the internal temperature should be at least 180`F.
